With the fall harvest and upcoming Thanksgiving feasts, it’s the perfect time of year for fall/winter cocktails incorporating seasonal shrubs (sweetened vinegar-based syrup). For any seasonal fall/winter or Thanksgiving cocktails, here are a few seasonal shrubs recipes to make at home and enjoy with cocktails from Prairie Organic Spirits. Apple is one of my favorite fruits in cocktails this time of year so check out some of the recipes below. To use the shrubs in a cocktail, follow the below recipe -
- 1 cup water
- ½ cup balsamic vinegar
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ cup sugar
- 2 cups unsweetened cranberry juice
- 10 dried Black Mission figs, coarsely chopped
- 2 sprigs fresh rosemary
- 1 tablespoon black peppercorns
Combine water, vinegar, and sugars and whisk or shake until mostly dissolved. Add cranberry juice, figs, rosemary and peppercorns; mix well to combine. Refrigerate for 24-48 hours and strain to remove solids before using.
- 2 cups pears, chopped
- ½ cup sugar (or sweetener of your choice)
- ½ cup apple cider vinegar
In large mason jar, add pears and sugar. Place lid on jar and shake. Keep in the refrigerator for 24 hours, shaking every 4 hours (when possible). After, shake and add the vinegar. Place back in refrigerator for another 24 hours, shaking every 4 hours. Strain through a fine mesh sieve and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.
- 1 cup orange juice
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 medium sprigs rosemary
In a small pan over medium-low heat, combine all ingredients. Cook, stirring for 10 minutes. Strain the shrub into a heat-safe glass jar (like a mason jar) and let the mixture cool to room temperature.
Prairie Shrub Cocktail
- 2 oz Prairie Organic Vodka or Prairie Cucumber-Flavored Organic Vodka
- ½ oz shrub of your choice
- Club Soda
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Shake and serve over ice in a tall glass and top with club soda.
- 2 oz. Prairie Organic Gin
- ½ oz. fresh beet puree
- ¾ oz. ginger syrup
- ½ oz. ginger liqueur
- Soda water
- Rosemary garnish
- Cucumber slices
- Basil leaves
Muddle cucumbers and basil, add remaining ingredients and shake. Serve in a highball glass.
Prairie Hard Cider
- 1 ½ oz. Prairie Organic Vodka
- ¼ oz. maple syrup
- ½ oz. cranberry juice
- ¾ oz. spiced apple-cinnamon cider
Add all ingredients to a highball glass and stir well.
Prairie Happy Apple
- 1 ½ oz. Prairie Organic Vodka
- ½ oz. Aperol
- ½ oz. honey syrup
- ½ oz. lemon
- Apple, cubed and top with soda water.
Shake all ingredients over ice, except soda. Strain into a highball glass. Top with soda and add apple cubes.
