Cocktail Spotlight - Berry Cocktails, Part 1

My facebook fans have responded by choosing wild berries for their favorite flavor this winter season. So I give you my very best berry cocktails - part one.

Blueberries, either fresh, frozen, or as a distilled spirit provide a sweet tartness to cocktails and pair well with a variety of other flavors. Whether you are looking for fresh blueberry cocktails or a way to use that blueberry-flavored liquor, this list of cocktails is a good place to start.

Many of these cocktails use fresh blueberries, often in combination with other berries. The peak season for these berries in North America is during the summer months, though they can be frozen and stored for use year-round. In other drinks, blueberry juice is called for. You can find bottled juice at the local grocer, but you can also muddle the berries or use your juicer to extract the juice.

The Very Berry Cosmo is one of my favorite ways to enjoy Van Gogh Acai-Blueberry Vodka or Absolut Acai Berry if the flavored Van Gogh is not available. In comparison with this cocktail, the original Cosmo is rather bland (although still a nice drink), but I am impressed with the mix of natural blueberry and black raspberries (from Chambord) in this version. It is "very berry" and the two spirits combine for a very dark purple that is ideal anytime you want a drink to have a dark and mysterious feel.
